Edward Brown Part 1.
Later Sir Edward Brown, was one of the first systematic poultry extension teachers and his works were prolific.
Before even the idea of "poultry teachers or extension officers" for the common man was formed, Edward Brown was writing books for the ordinary poultry keeper, researching other countries methods, conducting classes and advocating for a national, and later, an international collaboration of poultry education. He was instrumental in establishing the National Poultry Conference, England, in 1912 then The International Association of Poultry Instructors and Investigators, which became the World Poultry Science Association. The WPSA organized First World Poultry Congress in the Hague. The same sequence of World Poultry Congress meetings continues to this day. It included the two in Australia, 1962 in Sydney, the last to have a live and judged purebreed poultry exhibition as part of the Congress, and the 2008 Congress in Brisbane where again Poultry exhibitors had a range of meetings specific to small breeders and conservationists, though no live poultry. Interestingly the earliest work by Edward Brown was written under a pseudonym, as Edward was concerned that serious scientists were not involved in teaching poultry. Only women did that. I wonder what today's liberated population would think of that. Later he was knighted becoming Sir Edward Brown for his services to the poultry industry.
An interesting comment in his Memoirs, listed below, Sir Edward mentions that he encouraged Herbert Atkinson to write his famous works. Even pure breed game were considered in his mind to be an important part of the gene pool.
I have collated what I know of his work, although its far from complete and I invite comment and additional information I can include in this presentation, so we may be all better informed.
I have commenced with Sir Edward Brown's work in printed form, not including magazines and ephemera. If I have never seen copy, only a reference in advertising or referenced in other books or reference catalogues, it is marked as "Unsighted". The balance of materials I have seen either in my collection or in another collection, and usually have been read by me.
Any mistakes are mine. Please inform me if you find any, for the sake of a reliable record. Jim Finger

From the view of the exhibitor and breeder, this is one of the most important works of Edward Brown. A systematic examination of the races of Poultry and the resultant breeds derived from each race or type. Very heavily illustrated, unfortunately only in black and white engravings. Had it been in colour it would have usurped Wright as the standard work. The frontis pic is the same as the pic used in Industrial Poultry Keeping black and white.
This work was expanded in the later Publication Poultry Breeding and Production.

This book produces to raise funds for the St Dunstans war rehabilitation centre. The book also makes mention of "Synopsis of Poultry Practice" prepared to assist the centre and also translated into Braile (neither edition sighted by me). A full index makes this a very useful backyard poultry keepers handbook of its time. The brail edition is highly collectible, and as far as I know the only poultry book of its time to be translated into Braile.
