A notice of the death of Sir Edward  Sept 2 1939, found inside this copy, along with and inscription and signature of Sir Edward to Josiah Stamp, another well known identity in the poultry world of the 1930's. I think this book is very important reading from several perspectives.

Sir Edward was tremendously influential in the world of poultry from the subsistence farmer , to fancier, to developing commercial industry. Though he was a man of his day, and today we would debate the details of some of the long held Darwinian views of breed development, Sir Edward was influential in the development of the science based development of poultry management. 

Sir Edward was a champion of pure breeds in that he believed proper development of the breeds would mean that open breeding stocks should have both important breed distinctives that should be maintained but also that the breed distinctives should as not sacrifice the economic value of the birds, a view which helped many a subsistence farmer rise above his struggle lifestyle to a more prosperous  life.

Sir Edward was influential amongst a wide range of breeders whose information was only preserved because of the publication of their work. Breeders of the like of Herbert Atkinson, and his work on the OEG, was encouraged by Sir Edward..

Some parts are laborious but worth the time and effort. Numerous works referenced here by themselves themselves provide a valuable asset.

 

  

 Other Publications

Sir Edward was prolific in writing about poultry, in particular  the development of the practice of keeping poultry in 3 areas, pure breeds , economic support for small landholders and large scale replacement of imports with home industry. His achievements were  very large, and vet he was also passionate about political governance, as well as active in his Church. His writings were numerous in the popular press with numerous  regular columns , occasional articles, and contribution to books. He often wrote without attribution, not wanting to draw acclaim, and also wrote under a pen name  Stephen Beale. Stephen was his paternal grandfathers given name and Beale was his maternal grandmothers family name.

I am compiling a list which I will add here soon, but every time I think its ready another addition appears.
