Welcome to Trewalla.

For  32 years  creating and growing Bellsouth, I was pretty immersed in everything chooks, from the home backyard to the commercial operators, and vaccine makers. I sold Bellsouth in 2012 because I had some pretty serious health problems.  I survived but after 8 years watching and supporting from the sidelines, I have decided its time to be active again.

I have written a number of books over the years, plus a stack of technical bulletins, and  over the 40 years collected a lot of books and publications. I have started to sell my poultry books, and  information, new and old, ( and maybe I will  buy some more too).  I do some bookbinding as a hobby, make special editions handbound, and I still dabble in some parts of the poultry industry. I look forward to  expanding this site as I am able, and I hope my interests are also a little interesting to you too.

About the masthead.

Long ago, my wife's mother grew up in the wilds of northern Tasmania, in an area known as Trewalla. The actual name of the area is Trawalla but we have since found the Aboriginal pronunciation is more like Truwella.  The name was made into the house name, and a plaque made from hammered copper many many years ago. When the family migrated to Victoria back before WW2, the sign came to, and adorned the farm of one of the brothers. When he passed away, the farm was sold and the sign came to Merle. She moved into a granny flat in our yard in the 90's.   When Bellsouth was sold, we changed the company name to Trewalla out of  respect for Merle. The masthead  is that sign, which still adorns the house, tough Trewalla the company has now passed itself into history.

I have this one   should I restore it as far as possible to original to make it look like its original, or put on a complete new binding , correcting the structural issues, so it can  be read and used not just look like its original? Lots of cost difference between the two.  A discussion below.  Jim

Fine Binding In America  1956

“After all that can be said in favor of retaining books in their original covers, there are very many which for their preservation demand rebinding, even as old rags should give place to proper clothing. Every collector, if he takes a just view of the matter, cannot do otherwise than consider himself as their temporary custodian, and wish to transmit them to his successors if possible in better condition than when he acquired them. Perhaps some critics may still cavil at what they consider a too lavish expenditure, and still vaunt the superiority of the "original cover." If these are good, any renewal of them is unnecessary, but as all books must have bindings, it is surely better to have them well done and even elaborately decorated, no matter when their covers may be placed upon them. The better they are, the better the chance of the survival of the volumes, and the best will wear out soon enough.”

They are being sold as part of my personal book collection.

The Doyens of Poultry Series.

This series was originally conceived as a series of Australian Breed books much like the Shire publications. However Adrian Kuys suggested that the  series should be the breeds and the breeder. It should feature prominent Australian breeds and successful breeders. Adrian suggested the idea of the Doyens of Poultry as the series title. A Doyen is a specialist recognized for the contribution to the breed. Unfortunately we started the series a little too late. Colin Gregor passed away before the book was released, and three other titles in the series were at the stage of interviews concluded and drafts written but never concluded as all passed away before they could be completed. Adrian Kuys passed away before Covid and the notes were lost. So the series is limited to the 5 Books.

The Beginners Guide Series.

Early in the life of Bellsouth we found we were answering lots of questions, pretty much the same questions we see today on the forums and FB pages. So I wrote or collaborated with others to record that information. Much is still on the Bellsouth  web pages  (no longer owned by me) but the sources of the material not accredited to me.

Though at present  most out of print, maybe if I get enquiries I will see about reprints.
