Welcome to Trewalla.

For  32 years  creating and growing Bellsouth, I was pretty immersed in everything chooks, from the home backyard to the commercial operators, and vaccine makers. I sold Bellsouth in 2012 because I had some pretty serious health problems.  I survived but after 8 years watching and supporting from the sidelines, I have decided its time to be active again.

I have written a number of books over the years, plus a stack of technical bulletins, and  over the 40 years collected a lot of books and publications. I have started to sell my poultry books, and  information, new and old, ( and maybe I will  buy some more too).  I do some bookbinding as a hobby, make special editions handbound, and I still dabble in some parts of the poultry industry. I look forward to  expanding this site as I am able, and I hope my interests are also a little interesting to you too.

About the masthead.

Long ago, my wife's mother grew up in the wilds of northern Tasmania, in an area known as Trewalla. The actual name of the area is Trawalla but we have since found the Aboriginal pronunciation is more like Truwella.  The name was made into the house name, and a plaque made from hammered copper many many years ago. When the family migrated to Victoria back before WW2, the sign came to, and adorned the farm of one of the brothers. When he passed away, the farm was sold and the sign came to Merle. She moved into a granny flat in our yard in the 90's.   When Bellsouth was sold, we changed the company name to Trewalla out of  respect for Merle. The masthead  is that sign, which still adorns the house, tough Trewalla the company has now passed itself into history.

Edward Brown Part 1.

Read more: Brown Sir Edward and Family Part 1

Joseph Batty, Born 1929, an education literature developer and publisher in the UK, had a interest in poultry which resulted in the publication of a wide range of books on associated topics.  Some rate his bird material as second hand, some think it not legitimately written by him.

However, the range is extensive so a  bibliography  is warranted. The quality of his work varies from excellent hardback works, to poor  limp covered

perfect bindings , to pamphlets.

A checklist of the books published by Dr Batty,  various authors and publisher names.

 Information  Layout,

Author, Title, Publisher,  Date, binding, size and pages (pp) and col plts (cp) (price guide).

Roughly listed in publication order.  Pleae note the pictures are all resized to make upload easy. Check the book sizes as listed.

Any errors are mine, I am  happy to have them pointed out and the page amended with credits.( several books missed on first production).   Jim Finger.

Price Guide presumes near fine condition, meaning no faults, splits, damage, and copies similar seen on the market from about 2018. Also google search may also give a copy currently available and alternative pricing. It is a guide only, based on my best    estimates.

Batty, Joseph  Herbert Atkinson Game Fowl Artist   Beech   2006   pp160 hb with jacket It is stitched, and it’s a summary of the Atkinson plates. $50-100

Batty's publications  had at this time degraded to a series of low cost poor production books. This list, from the above Game Fowl Artist, is I think a wish list. I never stocked any of them as the quality was so poor, and they were mainly cut and past of other old material. Many of these titles I never saw, the few I did  were barely with the freight to get them to Oz. Batty was in educational books and poultry was his hobby so to speak. But difficulties with printers, and financial problems producsed an ever changing publishers name, and a poor reputation. So the quality of content fell, and the quality of production fell. In personal communication, he told me that he never made any money from poultry books, and I am not surprised. I tried it and it’s a tough gig. But better a few with high quality production standards, and high quality authors, than poor on both accounts.

A list in the  Game Fowl Artist.
