Women Authors of Poultry Literature.
This is a developing page which will be updates as I get to the relevant titles. In a mans world, a small but significant number of women made significant contributions to the knowledge base of keeping and breeding poultry. I will be pleased to hear from others on this topic both here and on facebook chickenhistorynow.. email me jim at trewalla dot com.

One of the curiosities of the poultry world is the position of women. Indeed when the poultry industry was segregated into just 2 parts the fighting fowl and the domestic “dunghill” fowl it seems women were the only ones to pay attention to the productive capabilities of the birds. Edward Brown comments on this as do many of the USDA training publications, and extension services. The women were able to make useful contributions to the farm budget from the collection of eggs, and a lot of the time the man of the house was unaware of the level of income achieved.
In the published literature however there were a good number of publications by women encouraging mainly the financial benefits. Indeed Edward Brown wrote under a pseudonym, reportedly to escape the notice of the powers of the industry who thought that encouraging the small producer was a bad idea. That’s only what women do! What is old is new again. And today the shows would probably fail if not for the input of women.
My biblio list has always confused me on this point, why so many women authors with no copies of their books available on the market.
Several theories spring to mind.
1/ The women couldn’t get support for major production runs so published a small run with private money but then the men wouldn’t want to spent their money on that.
2/ All the copies were scooped up quickly and then worn out by repeated use.
3/ The market was limited so money couldn’t be made from the sale of the books, so they quickly went out of production.
4/ The big money was in exhibition poultry with the “hen fever” and new breeds, that the overall market was flooded with exotic books and the ordinary dunghill fowl was of much less priority.
Whatever way it seems that right back from the early times of domestication, it was the women who did the work.
Looking down the list , far from complete of about 150 female authors, and reading the history books of the women who took the works written by men and taught them to the women on the small holdings, it not hard to see they have made useful contributions to the knowledge base.
And I see several patterns emerging about the books and the categories of the authors.
1/ Such a large number of the books are listed as unsighted. That is no copies top be found, or at least that I can find. Mrs Rawson from Australia is a prime example.
2/ Many of the early authors were at first editors, or worked for publishers, before becoming authors in their own right.
3/ Most were in the how to make a productive business from poultry.
4/ Some, especially after the Queen was given poultry, were from the gentry and had significant cultural recognition, and finances. The Henwife Mrs Arbuthnot springs to mind, having the funding and the motivation to promote poultry keeping and poultry knowledge.
5/ In the 20th century women also became prominent in the roles of knowledge preservation, compiling lists of books or becoming significant collectors and authors themselves, Lenora Hering and Thea Lowry spring to mind. An many became significant researchers and extension officers. I recall reading, I am not sure where, of a female extension officer amongst the peasant farmers of the Boondocks of the USA. A statement like this” when we started there was great resistance from the men to wives learning, and with reluctance we were given permission to meet with the wives to talk about “their” hens. As time went on and the production increased and some money flowed from “their hens” the men were glad to welcome us to teach the wives about “our” hens. Much later we were welcomed to come and talk about “my” hens.
Its quite hard to find good information on the various authors, ( it is hard also for information about the male authors), so a great deal of surmising goes on.
In collectible terms which ones are best? Depends on the interest range, but I tend to look at them this way.
1/ Most collectible. Breed books with lots of great artwork, back to the hand coloured and early litho productions. Its actually likely though difficult to find records, but the coloured plates of the early 1800’s were likely partly or fully finished by women. So a book authored by and painted by women sounds like a great find. Authentication may be a bit thin, but its most likely. So Arbuthnott/ Mrs Blair Ferguson hits the top of the list, especially if its in immaculate condition.
2/Next most important are breed books, or those dealing with the history or characteristics of the various breeds of the day. And this follows right up to modern authors. So C S Valentine Runner Ducks, Croad, Daniels, Dieckman, Hering, Thea, and Watts are some.
3/ Then comes a multitude of books which are rare. Maye they don’t have all the fancy print, but finding copies is hard. If you find the, them that are cheap. Often they are specific titles like poultry keeping for women. A number are from women in the far flung locations like India and South Africa (and Australia).
4/ Then there are the books of great hardship, a comment from one of C S Valentine's works written under the pseudonym Myra Norys ( Syron backwards) Easy Poultry Keeping for Invalids “ as I have proved it can be done from a wheelchair”. I would like to see the back story.
5/ Books or works by Women Editors , like Comyns-Lewer, Watts and the women editors of Reliable Poultry Journal, and others right up to today such as Meg Millers work. In many ways another vital part of maintaining the history of poultry.
6/ Cooking books feature in the list I think its wrong to leave them out but they dont rate highly as collectibles, unless they are Mrs Beeton’s Poultry as well as Mrs Beeton’s cook book.
7/ Lowest on my list are the bad advice books written by celebrities to make a buck. Bad information, wrong motives. Almost all “modern backyard chooks my way sort of books”. Probably should be collected because in 100 years everyone will ask what was that about. Of course I think all the ones I published should be collected!!
My last comment. The list isn’t complete, the resource material at my hands gives all sorts of hinds and asks all sorts of questions. As always all mistakes, errors or omission, and opinions are mine.
I ask that you contribute either with source quotation or anonymous , any information about these books ( particularly if listed as unsighted) and author information, background or other significant contributions any of them have made to poultry.
So here is the list I have collected over the years, including all the unverified titles and authors. I will add pics if I have them and some commentry if I have it.

From The Kansas Stae University collection.
Leonora C. "Nora" Hering (1898-1983) collected poultry art, artifacts, and publications. The scarcity of fresh eggs during the Second World War prompted Hering to begin breeding poultry. She voraciously read books and articles on the topic, frequently contacting land grant university librarians in order to track down elusive publications. She subscribed to poultry journals and amassed a sizable collection of books on the subject. Her acquisitions included books from the estate of Cornish poultry breeder Godfrey Trevelyan Williams. She also collected taxidermy specimens and depictions of poultry in art and on postage stamps.
By 1950, she had become an authority on the topic of poultry. James W Gwin, poultry marketing specialist at the University of Maryland, lauded her as the "poultry historian." Hering expressed a commitment to donating her various poultry-related collections to Kansas State College and coordinated her efforts with Department of Poultry Husbandry chairperson Loyal F. Payne.
In January 1953, Stanford University's Main Library displayed some of her books, drawings, and prints. In August 1955, she presented on the topic, "The Chicken in Art and Literature" at the 44th annual meeting of the National Poultry Science Association at Michigan State University in East Lansing, and later published an article of the same name in Cackle and Crow. She spoke to the Grolier Society on the topic of the Araucana breed in May 1959, and later developed an article on the topic for Poultry Press.
Over a twenty-five year period, Hering accumulated a collection of nearly 1000 poultry publications. Her international contacts included poultry specialists in New Zealand and Japan, and she was frequently recommended to those who sought historical information about the poultry trade, the origins of poultry breeding in the San Francisco Bay region, and other related topics.
This collection consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, prints, postage stamps, journal and typescript articles pertaining to poultry breeder Leonora C. Hering (1898-1983). A member of the World’s Poultry Science Association.

[002359] Watts, Miss e. Poultry, an Original and Practical Guide to Their Breeding, Rearing, Feeding, and Exhibiting. London: F Warne, 1867. 12mo:ppi-iv 1-192 Cfp, 6wc. Hard with Paper Covered Boards. Elizabeth Watts.
Miss Elizabeth Watts was the Editor of the Poultry Department of the “Field” magazine, Editor of the Poultry Chronicle and contributed to other newspapers of the time.
Her first book was Poultry an original and Practical Guide to their Breeding, Rearing Feeding, and Exhibiting. It was published as one of the Country and Family Circle books by Frederick Warne and co London12 mo small format pp i-iv 1 192 with a coloured frontispiece and 6 woodcuts. It has no date but Punnett “ Notes on old poultry books” dates the edition as 1867 due to various other cross references. Other more modern references suggest 1860 (I think wrong) and Hawks,1st 1867, then 1868 and a new ed 1870. I have sighted only the first ed no date. Bound in boards with orange printed cover. This is obviously the first of her original works and deals mainly with the home poultry keeper of that era with about 25% of the book considering the breeds.

Her other work was as Editor of the Poultry Yard. This book first written by WCL Martin. This book was written in 1853 G Routledge and co 144pp. with an edition in 1860. Martin wrote several other works which were part of larger works and also Our Domestic fowls, very difficult to find and unsighted by me.
However the Poultry Yard, Comprising the management of Fowls for Use and Exhibition, a new edition, was listed in 1860 as Revised by Elizabeth Watts 172pp illustrated, with some list 1863, 1866, 1867, 1870. All 172pp. Some variations in covers below.
Then a new edition revised by Edward Brown 1893 155pp and 1902 (unsighted by me)
The covers were variable some cloth some printed covers.
However the content of the 1860-1870 editions all appears to be the same.
The fascinating part is the content is very unlike the content of her first work. It’s a thoroughly scholarly examination of the sources of domestic fowl of interest to any interested in breed history and the history of poultry keeping of that era. I am sure it is primarily Martins work corrected and expanded by Watts. It contains numerous cross reference to other old sources.
I have not been able to source Martin’s original work to see how much is his and how much is edited by Watts. Nevertheless its interesting that she is one of a small group of women authors and must have had some skill to get there.
The best quotation I have found is in a section where Watts is telling of the quotations of a writer (unnamed) who says “Sketchley tells us that he has always found the round eggs to contain the female chicks and the oblong eggs to contain the male. This however, though it may be newly discovered by Sketchley was known to Columella and Stephanus” Watts comments “It is contradicted, apparently with sufficient reason, for it appears impossible to ascertain with certainty if the egg is fecundated.” The same writer says” If you examine the egg between your eye and a candle, you will be able to discern the position caused by the little air-bag in the blunt end of the shell. If this be in the center, the egg will produce a cock; if at one side a hen’ Then comments Watts “We know of no facts which will lead to receiving this with implicit confidence”. Such beautiful language. We should use it frequently for some of the “stories” on management written on many facebook pages.
I had a customer, must be almost 20 years ago, bragging about how his father had taught him to sex eggs and he was close to 100% accurate, by a somewhat similar method. He was touting for work being in lack of employment at the time. I asked him if he wanted a real job. I said "I can get you a job earning 50k a year ( equivalent to 150k today)" He asked “Where” . and I replied "I do some work for the Fiveways layer hatchery. They set 100,000 eggs per week and if you can do what you say, that will let them set double the number as they usually destroy the males after hatch. Can I call and set up an appointment? " He was out the door faster than you could blink.
We know of no facts which will lead to receiving his statements with implicit confidence. Propriety refrains me for using the common simple expression of today.
I recommend the Poultry Yard as a great history read with numerous references to source literature and to the stories of the day. And for a collector, Poultry By Watts and any by William Charles Linnaeus Martin are worth adding to the collection by way of rarity. Enjoy! Jim.
